The build up so far has set up a situation where Dr. Cyrus is the most important crew member of the   SILO. But he, SILO (computer) and Mr. Mayhew band together and attempt to override the mission's primary objective in order to divert course to PLANET X.
Planet X is Mayhew's destination. Cyrus is tempted by an obsessive pursuit of knowledge. The human race is at stake but Cyrus has touch with that through depression and isolation.
The plot comes down to sacrifice. Who is willing to sacrifice the most in order to achieve their mission. At the end Capt. North is willing to destroy the SILO if Cyrus doesn't surrender.
Cyrus is willing to cut off the oxygen supply if the others don't relent.
