Planet X is Mayhew's destination. Cyrus is tempted by an obsessive pursuit of knowledge. The human race is at stake but Cyrus has touch with that through depression and isolation.
The plot comes down to sacrifice. Who is willing to sacrifice the most in order to achieve their mission. At the end Capt. North is willing to destroy the SILO if Cyrus doesn't surrender.
Cyrus is willing to cut off the oxygen supply if the others don't relent.
